Discover the Best Bars and Pubs in Indonesia

Indonesia’s largest archipelago is brimming with exciting adventures and enticing sights, as well as a range of fascinating cultural experiences. From its bustling capitals to the pristine islands of the equator, this incredible country is filled with a kaleidoscope of attractions that will dazzle and charm you.

Bars & Pubs

Bars are part of Indonesia’s burgeoning nightlife scene, with many thriving as restaurants and cafes too, particularly for younger generations. The majority are social centers, often serving food and drink to a wide clientele, with most being popular for their karaoke, Wi-Fi access and party atmosphere.

Known for its loud music, Jakarta’s bars feature rock, jazz, blues, R & B, emo (ask a teenager) and hardcore – all topped off by karaoke, the unofficial Indonesian answer to live music.

Speakeasys

A/A Bar combines classic and innovative cocktails with an air of exclusivity to create this speakeasy in the city’s upscale Senopati neighbourhood. Inside, guests are tucked away in intimate corners to enjoy inventive drinks made with local ingredients including Pandan, Sage or Chrysanthemum.

Blasphemy law

Indonesia’s blasphemy laws have been used to attack those deemed to have insulted Islam, including former Christian governor Basuki “Ahok” Purnama, who was jailed for two years in 2017 on blasphemy charges widely seen as politically motivated. A bar and restaurant chain in the capital, Holywings, was stripped of its permit after police charged six employees with blasphemy over a drinks promotion offering free drinks for people named Mohammed or Maria.
